NECC-National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC)
NECC is the world’s largest association of poultry farmers, dedicated to determining one’s selling price. As a result, consumers’ buying and farmers’ selling rates remain among the lowest globally (35%-40%).
This initiative was launched by Dr. B.V. Rao, widely known as the “Father of Indian Poultry Industry” and founder chairman of the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC). Dr. Rao was inducted into the International Poultry Hall of Fame by the World Poultry Science Association in 2004. He also received the Padma Shri award from the Government of India in 1990 for his revolutionary efforts for India’s poultry sector.
Your Guide to Daily Wholesale Egg Rates
Wholesale egg rates refer to the bulk rates paid by distributors and retailers. These rates change frequently, so it is essential to stay updated with the daily and monthly egg rates suggested by the NECC. The egg rates listed serve as guidelines for both buyers and sellers in the egg market, acting as standard national egg prices that are purely advisory, not compulsory.
As eggs move from wholesale distributors to retailers, the price per egg increases. As a result, supermarket rates are a bit higher than wholesale rates.
Daily egg rates are changed frequently based on various factors, including market conditions, demand and supply, and weather etc. Also, the rising cost of feed (corn and soybeans), which are the main ingredients in chicken feed, directly impacts egg prices. Being updated with today’s egg rate helps you to make informed decisions while purchasing the eggs.
Egg Consumption in India
The Egg Consumption in India has been booming over the years, reflecting a shift toward higher protein intake.
According to the Press Information Bureau (Govt. of India): “Per capita availability of eggs is 103 annually in 2023–24 as against 62 in 2014–15.”
The national egg market in India is projected to generate revenue of approximately US $125.00 million by 2025. The growth rate of the eggs market is impressive, with a 13.77 % CAGR through 2029 to reach US $209.46 million.
On the other hand, China will lead in absolute revenue with US $4.67 billion in 2025. By 2029, the number of egg market users is expected to climb to 16.4 million, and an average revenue per user (ARPU) of US $10.68.

Factors Influencing Egg Rates in India
- Feed Cost: Corn and soybean feed recorded for approximately 75–80 % of production cost; as a result, these prices almost directly impact egg rate.
- Disease Outbreaks: Outbreaks also play an important role in egg prices, such as avian influenza, which caused massive production losses.
- Seasonal Demand: Seasonality also affects egg rates, like Diwali, Christmas, including extreme heat or cold, influences demand.
- Government Interventions: Feed subsidies or import tariffs are also a factor in smoothing out higher rates.
- International Trends: International market conditions are volatile, and retail egg prices change according to the supply chain. For example, Indore experienced rosen ₹6 per piece as supply was unable to meet demand.
How NECC Sets Egg Prices
NECC doesn’t directly set egg prices. Rather, it is a collaborative platform where stakeholders (poultry farmers, zonal chairman, traders, distributors, and wholesale shop owners) share real-time market data to publish Live NECC egg rate as a “suggested” rate every midnight via E2 NECC.
Coordination, Not Regulation: NECC was founded in May 1982 to improve transparency for poultry farmers. Local chairmen compare all India and nearby zone rates before publishing a national rate list.
Market Forces & Inputs: The feed accounts for around 75–80 % of production expenses, so if grain prices soar, it almost directly impacts the egg rate.
Role of Traders & Distributors: Traders and distributors negotiate purchases with farmers. Their shipping costs and demand greatly affect the final prices.
Retailers & Consumer Signals: Retailers don’t primarily set egg prices, but changes in consumer behavior, cultural festivals, income changes, and dietary preferences create the market. NECC considers these factors when suggesting daily egg prices.
Poultry Industry in India
According to the Press Information Bureau (Government of India), India is the world’s third-largest egg producer. During 2022–23, the country produced over 138 billion eggs, reflecting steady growth in poultry output driven by rising consumption and organized farming practices.
Rising incomes, urbanization, and changing food habits drive this growing demand for eggs. Government subsidies, infrastructure, breeding, disease control, and a strong supply chain model help boost egg productivity.
India is among the world’s leading egg-producing countries, with a rapidly growing poultry industry supported by strong domestic demand, improved farming practices, and organized pricing through NECC. Also, Andhra Pradesh has a major lead in broiler production, proving its identity as a national poultry hub. No doubt, large-scale commercial farms dominate the industry; meanwhile, small farmers continue to play their essential role, especially in rural food security.
